Huntsman Building Solutions Continues Innovation Through HFO Spray Foam & Meets Global Warming Standards with Elimination of Harmful HFCs

“We welcome the Canadian Government Global Warming Potential (GWP) regulations and we’ve prepared for this since 2017 with Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) approved, CAN/ULC S705.1-15 compliant spray foam product. In fact, we’ve been selling our Heatlok Soya HFO products in the market for some time now with success,” says Jean-Francois Lupien, B.Sc., Global Director, Product Management for Huntsman Building Solutions.

Boisbriand, QC – HUNTSMAN BUILDING SOLUTIONS meets the certification standards set by the National Building Code in Canada and all other Canadian government regulations by ensuring the spray foam insulation (SPF) products it sells in Canada do not contain high global warming potential (GWP) Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). The company ceased manufacturing of all products containing HFCs as of January 2021 in preparation to meet full compliance under the Department of Environment and Climate Change of Canada and replaced the blowing agent with hydrofluoroolefin (HFO), allowing them to meet the demand of builders, contractors, architects, engineers, building and homeowners who want premium insulating products with lower impact to the environment.

A constant drive for continued advancement

The insulation market has always been driving and pushing building envelope performance. Huntsman Building Solutions has embraced the bigger picture by replacing HFCs with the most advanced HFO in all their products. It started with Honeywell’s game changing HFO blowing agent, with an ultra-low GWP and is non-ozone depleting. Then from there, Huntsman Building Solutions’ family of companies (Demilec and Icynene-Lapolla) had a progressive vision and pioneered new HFO spray foam insulation, with near-zero GWP.

“As a leader in the spray foam market, Huntsman Building Solutions prides itself on research and development by anticipating what our clients want and need,” says Lupien. “We understand the needs of the market. Right now, we are already developing the next generation of HFO products, making our HFO systems perform even better.”

The drive for continued advancement and innovation is at the core of Huntsman Building Solutions, and it is this kind of approach that brings value to the company’s customers. The research and development team leverage proprietary methods and processes for developing products which are more energy efficient, help divert plastic from landfills and reduce carbon footprint. The building sciences team is creating unique application methods using their spray foam products. An example of this is the company’s D-Max Wall application method that makes winter construction much easier.

Huntsman Building Solutions’ D-Max Wall Assembly

The D-Max Wall assembly is a new way to build. It can be as cold as -20°C outside and contractors can apply the Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation (ccSPF) as soon as the first-floor exterior sheeting is installed.  Where the wall is composed of regular steel studs, instead of installing the exterior sheeting directly on the steel studs, a Z girt is installed horizontally on the studs and then the sheeting is installed on top of the Z girts. This creates a space between the studs and the sheeting which allows the foam to insulate between the two, removing the thermal bridge. This provides a continuous insulation on the exterior of the structure but is applied from the interior of the building.

“Our HFO Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation is also a great solution for abatement of Radon, a radioactive gas in found in many Canadian homes and buildings which is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada,” says Lupien. “It prevents gas intrusion, by creating a continuous barrier that reaches joints, cracks and penetrations.”

Motivated by continued advancement, Huntsman Building Solutions products are developed and designed using renewable and recycled materials. Tons of plastic waste are diverted from landfills and used in the company’s spray foams.

“Even though the SPF industry is adopting greener technologies, there are still cheaper alternatives on the market that continue to use HFCs. While the contractors’ or installers’ experience, certification and skill set are essential, they also need to ask the right questions to ensure that they are using spray foam products that meet these new standards.” Says Jean-Francois Lupien, B.Sc., Global Director, Product Management for Huntsman Building Solutions.
