Alberta selects Diamond and Schmitt Architects to expand and redevelop Medicine Hat Regional hospital

The Government of Alberta has selected Diamond and Schmitt Architects in joint venture with Gibbs Gage Architects of Calgary for a $200 million expansion and redevelopment of the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

The project will add significant space for much needed ambulatory care and maternity services as well as a new emergency department and operating rooms. Renovation work will focus on the hospital’s west wing, built in 1957, and the acute care wings, built in 1985, and include flexible space to be used for specialized clinics.

“We look forward to working with the stakeholders and the public to provide Medicine Hat with a state-of-the-art healthcare facility that reflects local needs and priorities,” said Donald Schmitt, principal with Diamond and Schmitt Architects. “Renovating and expanding a large portion of the hospital will improve the delivery of patient services and aid in reducing wait times,” added Linda Iwasiw, Medicine Hat Regional Hospital vice-president.

The planning and consultation process will be led by Alberta Infrastructure in partnership with Alberta Health Services and commence right away. Design work will be complete by February 2012 with construction to start next year. The expanded and redeveloped facility will open in spring 2015.

Diamond and Schmitt Architects and Gibbs Gage Architects have previously collaborated on the Kinnear Centre for Creativity and Innovation at The Banff Centre, as well as The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary.
