Bondfield Construction selected to build 17-storey patient care tower at St. Michael’s Hospital
Bondfield Construction has been chosen to design, build and finance the construction of St. Michael’s Hospital’s new 17-storey patient care tower at the corner of Queen and Victoria streets and the renovation of approximately 150,000 square feet of existing hospital space, the hospital and Infrastructure Ontario announced today. Bondfield will begin work on site immediately.
Construction of the new Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower is expected to take three years, during which time the hospital will remain open. The tower has been specifically designed to care for critically ill patients and, with the renovations, will provide a larger, more modern space, equipped to manage the hospital’s current patient care volumes.
“This building and redevelopment project will transform patient care at St. Michael’s Hospital,” said hospital President and CEO Dr. Robert Howard. “Everything in the new Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower has been designed, using the best evidence available, to care for critically ill patients as we seek to become the premier critical care hospital in Canada.”
Five new operating rooms will be added to the hospital, each large enough to include state-of-the-art medical imaging equipment, such as MRIs, CT scanners and X-rays. Hybrid operating rooms allow surgeons to perform minimally invasive, image-guided or catheter-based procedures and undertake open surgery in the same operating room.
The new tower will have enlarged, state-of-the-art inpatient facilities for orthopedic surgery, oncology and respirology, and expanded intensive care units for coronary and medical-surgical patients. All in-patient rooms will be private, meaning more privacy and better infection control, with space for families, leading to better outcomes.
Renovations to existing space will include nearly doubling the size of the Slaight Family Emergency Department and replacing the 100-year-old Shuter Wing with a new three-story structure on the corner of Bond and Shuter streets. The Emergency Department was originally designed to accommodate 45,000 patient visits a year, but now sees more than 75,000 a year — a number that continues to grow with the downtown Toronto population. This expansion will allow St. Michael’s to continue to fulfill its mandate as a regional Level 1 trauma centre.
Bondfield Construction was one of three companies shortlisted for the construction and renovation project known as St. Michael’s 3.0. It is the construction part of St. Michael’s Partnership, which includes NORR Ltd. with Farrow Partnership, and Rocklyn Capital Inc.
Bondfield has signed a contract to design, build and finance the St. Michael’s redevelopment project for $301 million, which will be paid out at substantial completion. The contract guarantees a fixed price and fixed delivery date.

This significant investment in the St. Michael’s Hospital expansion and renovation will stimulate significant economic development in the community, and provide high quality healthcare services to Ontarians for many years to come.”
