HSBC unveils second new ‘green’, campus-style office building in Vancouver
HSBC Bank Canada has officially opened a new sustainability-focused, campus-style office building called Broadway Green located at 2910 Virtual Way, near Broadway Avenue and Renfrew Street in Vancouver, BC.
The four-storey, 173,000-sq.-ft. building is targeting LEED Gold certification, and brings together more than 1,000 HSBC employees previously housed at six offices located across the Lower Mainland. HSBC Bank Canada’s Head Office will remain at the HSBC Building at 885 West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver.
“Incorporating innovative design and technology, the building [will] reduce our annual carbon dioxide emissions from 3.5 tons to 2.5 tons per employee, by 2020.” Lindsay Gordon, president and Chief Executive Officer, HSBC Bank Canada. To mark the grand opening, HSBC Bank Canada also announced a $75,000 donation to support Science World’s Super Science Club.
HSBC Broadway Green’s sustainability features include a green roof that absorbs stormwater, provides natural insulation, and helps mitigate the urban heat island effect; heat sensors to detect heat gains from the sun, and ‘waste’ heat transferred for use in other parts of the building (rather than outside); water-efficient fixtures such as motion sensor low-flow taps and shower heads; and the building is located near public transportation, including Skytrain, six major bus-routes, and the Central Valley Greenway bike route. There is also priority parking for carpool, and low-emissions vehicles.
Broadway Green is HSBC’s second state-of-the-art, campus-style building in the Lower Mainland of B.C. HSBC’s Discovery Green office building in Burnaby opened in 2010, and achieved LEED Platinum certification for the Core and Shell.
