Local unions invest $200,000 in Oshawa university
Two local trade unions were recognized by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) for making a combined donation of $200,000 to help build two classrooms, which will be named after the United Association Local 463 Plumbers, Steamfitters, Welders and Apprentices (UA Local 463) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 894, for their donations of $100,000 each to the university.
“This is a great example of how local unions can invest in the prosperity and development of our community,” said Garth Cochrane, Business Manager for UA Local 463. “Despite these difficult economic times, I am proud to say that our members continue to make donations to help improve our entire community.”
Plaques would be placed in their honour outside two classes in the university’s Science building. The donations will be used to assist the university with capital improvements and to help maintain and improve current infrastructure, ensuring the university can continue to meet the capital needs that come with its significant growth. “We are thrilled to have been able to make such an important contribution to UOIT,” said John Gillett, Business Manager for IBEW Local 894. “We take great pride when our members are able to come together to support our community like this.”
