Planning, design and compliance team selected for new children’s treatment centre
Montgomery Sisam and Perkins+Will, working in joint venture, have been selected to lead the planning, design, and compliance aspects of a new children’s treatment centre that is a part of Hamilton Health Sciences’ McMaster Children’s Hospital. The project will be built on Wellington Street near Barton Street, across from the Regional Rehabilitation Centre.
The Ministry of Children and Youth Services is funding this project to bring together under one roof four programs currently located at Hamilton Health Sciences’ Chedoke campus. The new site will provide:
- Autism Spectrum Disorders services
- Child and Youth Mental Health Program
- Developmental Pediatrics and Rehabilitation services
- Prosthetic and Orthotic services
Together, these programs accommodate 70,000 visits annually for patients from infancy to 17 years of age, and older for the orthotics and prosthetics programs. This new facility will provide family-focused service and individualized programming, depending on the needs of the child and family.
Highlights of the project will include fully accessible design and construction, an outdoor wheeling track, a therapeutic playground and physiotherapy space.
The planning, design and compliance (PDC) team will prepare key documents that will establish the guidelines and performance requirements that the successful building team must meet when preparing its designs. The PDC team will also monitor construction progress and provide coordination and oversight during the commissioning and completion of the project.
Once the planning, design and compliance aspects are completed, the hospital and Infrastructure Ontario will issue a request for qualifications for a company to design, build and finance the project, using the Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP) model. Under this model, risks associated with the design, construction and financing of complex projects are transferred to the private sector.
