Vancouver Convention Centre shortlisted for International Structural Awards 2009
The Institution of Structural Engineers has announced the shortlist for the 2009 Structural Awards, recognizing excellence in structural engineering globally. Glotman Simpson has been shortlisted in the ‘Award for Arts or Entertainment Structures’ for their work on the Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion.
Established in 1968, the Structural Awards recognize and reward the work of the world’s most talented structural designers. Submissions are judged on whether, and to what extent, the structural design of the project displays excellence, creativity, innovation, sustainability, value and buildability.
The Vancouver Convention Centre measures well on these criteria, being targeted Gold LEED Certification, and for its elegant combination of glass, wood and steel under an expansive natural landform green roof. Creativity in structural design was necessary throughout construction, with Glotman Simpson’s use of Building Information Modeling and Tekla Software; the structural bracing required to allow the stunning glass perimeter wall; and the techniques required to build on a site that hovers over the Burrard Inlet.
The shortlist for this particular award consists of one submission from New York and three from the U.K. Winners will be announced on October 9th at the Natural History Museum, London. Coincidentally, the Darwin Centre ‘Cocoon’ by Arup at the very same Natural History Museum is running against the Vancouver Convention Centre for the Arts or Entertainment Structures Award.
